The color wheel demonstrates relationships between color families. Use basic color wheel information to create pleasing environments.
COLOR TERMS
Primary Colors
Red, Yellow, Blue
Primary colors serve as the base colors for all other colors.
Secondary Colors
Orange, Purple, Green
Mixing two primary colors results in one of the three secondary colors.
Complimenary Colors
Complimentary colors are any two colors located on opposite sides of the color wheel.
Tertiary Colors
Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Greens, Blue-Greens, Blue-Purples, Red-Purples
Tertiary colors result from mixing primary and secondary colors.
Analogous Colors
Adjacent color sets form analogous color groups.
Hue
Hues are pure colors. They do not have added blacks or whites.
Tints
Tints result after whites are added to hues.
Shades
Shades result after blacks are added to hues.
Saturation
Saturation describes the intensity of a hue.

Advancing Colors
Reds, yellows, and oranges suggest fire or the sun. Warm colors appear to advance when placed next to cool colors.

Passive Colors
Purples, blues and green are reminiscent of grass and water. Cool colors appear to recede when placed next to warm colors.
