Deck & Concrete Restore 4X Tips for Wood Surfaces

Restore Tips & Techniques

1. SURFACES

Decks: Deck & Concrete Restore 4X should only be applied on horizontal and vertical, structurally sound wood and composite surfaces. Some composite decking is engineered with moisture repellant or sealer that may prevent proper adhesion. Be sure to follow specific manufacturer’s recommendation before applying to any composite decking.

NOT FOR USE ON: Smooth or floated concrete, fiberglass, tile, and metal surfaces. These surfaces will not allow for proper adhesion. Do not use on driveways, garages, or other areas with vehicular traffic.

2. NEW WOOD

New wood may be wet with chemicals or have mill glaze from the manufacturing process. New wood should age for a minimum of 6 months before applying Deck & Concrete Restore 4X. The lumber must dry completely before applying the product to prevent peeling of the coating. The surface must also be properly cleaned and prepared using Restore Deck & Concrete Cleaner undiluted to remove all foreign material and mill glaze prior to application. Follow the PREPARATION instructions to be sure the Deck & Concrete adheres properly to the wood.

3. TINTING

Deck & Concrete Restore 4X must be tinted at the store of purchase. DO NOT APPLY IF PRODUCT HAS NOT BEEN TINTED.

4. COVERAGE

One 1-gallon can of Deck & Concrete Restore 4X will cover approximately 80 square feet with two coats

One 5-gallon bucket of Deck & Concrete Restore 4X will cover approximately 400 square feet with two coats

* TWO COATS ARE REQUIRED FOR EVERY SURFACE

Dry Film Thickness per coat – 10 mils

5. SURFACE PREPARATION FOR WOOD

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY PRIOR TO BEGINNING.

Long-term adhesion and durability can be impaired by a poorly prepared surface.

Step 1 Light Repairs:
Raised nail heads and/or screws should be secured before applying Deck & Concrete Restore 4X. If the galvanized coating is removed, the product will need to be taken down to bare wood only over the nails and/or screws.  Prime nail and screw heads with a water-based metal primer for rust. Touch up work will need to be done over those affected areas using left over Deck & Concrete Restore 4X. Using a power sander on the deck should be done with care to ensure galvanized coating is not stripped off the nail heads and/or screws. Remove loose splinters and replace severely damaged or rotting boards. Fill larger cracks using RESTORE CRACK FILLER or similar acrylic, non-silicone filler. Allow to dry.

Step 2 Clean:
Clean the surface using a brush and the Restore Deck & Concrete Cleaner. The surface must be completely clean and free of dirt, grease, mildew and organic growth to ensure product bonding and adhesion. For best results use a pressure washer to remove embedded dirt and grime. (Use at a low setting 500-1200 PSI. Do not use high pressure as it may harm the wood.) Loose paint needs to be scraped then sanded (use 50 grit sand paper).

Step 3 TEST SURFACE BEFORE APPLICATION: AFTER CLEANING THE SURFACE YOU MUST CONDUCT A SPLASH TEST TO ASSURE PROPER ADHESION. PREVIOUSLY APPLIED SEALERS may be present on the deck and are not always visible. ALL EXISTING SEALERS, PAINTS, STAINS, WATER REPELLANTS OR OTHER FINISHES MUST BE REMOVED for Restore 4X to adhere properly. To check for the presence of these, conduct a splash test by sprinkling water on multiple areas of the surface. Check at least 4 areas, or more for larger areas. Be sure to check both high traffic areas such as walkways and non-traffic areas. If the water absorbs rapidly into the surface, the surface is ready to be coated. If the water beads, puddles or is not absorbed, the surface is sealed and not ready to coat. If the surface is sealed, remove the sealer/coating with a deck stripper or sand paper (use 50 grit). Clean again with a brush and Restore Deck & Concrete Cleaner and conduct the splash test again. Continue this process until the water is absorbed by the wood in all test areas. Let the surface dry completely before application. Failure to follow this process will result in poor adhesion and possible coating failure.

6. WEATHER

ONLY APPLY DECK & CONCRETE RESTORE 4X WHEN THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE WILL BE BETWEEN 50-90 DEGREES F FOR A FULL 72 HOURS (DAY AND NIGHT). Do not apply if the temperature will fall below 50 degrees for 72 hours after application.

DO NOT APPLY IF RAIN IS EXPECTED WITHIN 48 HOURS OF APPLICATION.

7. APPLICATION FOR WOOD

TWO THICK COATS OF DECK & CONCRETE RESTORE ARE REQUIRED

TRIM AND VERTICAL SURFACES

Before applying Restore 4X to the horizontal Deck, first coat vertical surfaces such as deck posts, railings, or balusters. Cut in around edges with a brush and coat visible areas between deck boards.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICATION

STEP 1:
Before using Restore 4X, mix material thoroughly and repeat mixing occasionally during application. When using more than one container, combine all containers to ensure color consistency.

STEP 2:
Fill difficult cracks using a heavily loaded brush to dab these areas until the gaps or cracks are filled.

STEP 3:
Using a 3/8” to ½” nap roller saturate the roller cover and apply generously in a consistent pattern. Work to a wet edge at all times. Avoid rolling back into coated areas when drying has begun.

STEP 4:
Use a putty knife or other straight edge to remove any excess coating between deck boards. Difficult areas such as warped or cupped deck boards will require rolling across the narrow width of deck board as well as the length to ensure complete coverage.

STEP 5:
Allow first coat to dry 4-6 hours. Drying times may vary depending on temperature and humidity.

STEP 6:
Apply second coat using the same method as in STEP 2 and STEP 3.

STEP 7:
Allow second coat to dry 24 hours before light foot traffic and 3-5 days before replacing furniture. If surface is tacky or soft, allow extended drying time before putting furniture or other heavy objects back in place.

8. TWO COATS

TWO COATS OF DECK & CONCRETE RESTORE 4X ARE REQUIRED. The first coat acts as a primer. The second coat works as a finishing coat and will give greater wear as the product ages. Restore is made to be applied thickly with coverage of 80 square feet per gallon of 2 coats of the product.

9. DIFFICULT AREAS

Such as warped or cupped deck boards will require rolling across the narrow width of deck board as well as the length to ensure complete coverage. Deck & Concrete Restore 4X will fill nail hairline cracks.  Fill difficult cracks use a heavily loaded brush to dab these areas until the gaps or cracks are filled. Larger cracks can be filled using Restore Crack Filler.

10. DRYING TIMES

Dry times may vary due to weather conditions such as humidity, rain, high/low temperatures and seasonal changes. Apply Deck & Concrete Restore 4X when no rain is expected for a minimum of 24 hours after applying Deck & Concrete Restore 4X. The second coat can be applied as early as 4 to 6 hours after the first coat, but if the area is still wet do not apply until surface is not tacky to the touch. Allow the area to dry for a minimum 24 hours before walking on the surface and 3-5 days before placing furniture on the area.

Dry times are based off the optimal application temperature of 70 degrees. Allow more time to dry at lower temperatures. Deck & Concrete Restore 4X should not be applied if temperatures are below 50 degrees and above 90 degrees for 72 hours either day or night.

11. HOT WEATHER APPLICATION

When applying in hot conditions and/or in direct sunlight, dampen the surface to be painted with a fine mist of water. Be careful not to saturate the area or allow puddles to form. Misting the surface will keep Deck & Concrete Restore from drying too fast. Evaporation may occur quickly during hotter weather causing the product to thicken. If this occurs, add up to ½ pint (8 oz.) of water per gallon of Deck & Concrete Restore & stir thoroughly.

12. CLEAN UP

Deck & Concrete Restore 4X is a water based product that will clean up with soap and water. For best results clean up should be done before the product dries. Cover the areas around spindles and walls to avoid splattering during the application process.

13. COATING MAINTENANCE

Basic maintenance consists of sweeping or blowing clean the surface from dirt, leaves, and other debris. Clean the surface seasonally and when necessary with Restore Deck & Concrete Cleaner, a brush and a water hose

DO NOT USE A PRESSURE WASHER

For snow removal use a PLASTIC SHOVEL (DO NOT USE A METAL SHOVEL OR A SNOW BLOWER)

14. REMOVING RESTORE

Restore products are made to last and adhere for long periods of time. To remove Deck & Concrete Restore 4X completely you can use a stripper or sand the surface using 50 grit sandpaper. Deck & Concrete Restore 4X can be painted over with a water based floor paint, a solid acrylic stain, or another coat of Restore 4X. Clean the existing surface thoroughly before applying the new coating.
