Wood Stain After

This project was inspired by The Lilypad Cottage.

  1. Set up a work space in a well ventilated area (such as a garage).
  2. Lay down the three cedar boards horizontally.
  3. Place the two furring strip boards vertically in the center of the three cedar boards.
  4. Use the drill and screws to attach the furring strip boards to the three cedar boards.
  5. Turn over the board.
  6. Sand the entire surface lightly, progressing from 120-grit, to 180-grit, finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the grain.
  7. Remove sanding dust between each grit of sandpaper by lightly dragging the tack cloth across from the surface.
  8. Using a clean, lint-free rag, flood the entire surface with the Rust-Oleum® Wood Care Ultimate Wood Stain in your color choice. Be generous with the amount of stain applied.
  9. Let the stain sit for 2-3 minutes then wipe off any excess stain, using a clean rag, wiping in the direction of the grain. Ensure that all excess stain is removed from the surface.
  10. Let dry for 1-2 hours.
  11. Using the paint brush, paint on the words “Wishing You Peace, Joy & Love.” If you cannot free hand well, use a stencil to achieve the lettering.
  12. Let dry for 1-2 hours.
  13. Apply the Rust-Oleum® Wood Care Ultimate Polyurethane with a high quality synthetic bristle paint brush. For best results, apply 2-3 coats.
  14. Allow to dry 2-4 hours in between coats. Allow to dry fully for 2 hours.
  15. Once dry, display your sign for the holiday season.
