Christmas tree made from reclaimed wood After
  1. Set up a work space in a well ventilated area (such as a garage).
  2. Cut one 5’ piece of cedar as your frame for the tree. Lay down the frame vertically.
  3. Start from about 1’ from the ground and lay the remaining 5 planks on the frame horizontally, leaving 1” in between each plank. You will have 5 planks of cedar arranged perpendicular to the frame.
  4. Using a screw and the drill, attach the star to the top of the frame.
  5. Next, use a ruler and a pencil to draw an angle from the bottom of the tree to the top, using the wooden star on top as your ending point.
  6. Once marked, use a jigsaw to cut the angle on each cedar piece. The total measurement of the project is 36” wide by 4’ tall.
  7. Use the drill and screws to attach each board to the 5’ frame. Drill from the back.
  8. Sand the surface of each plank lightly, progressing from 120-grit, to 180-grit finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the grain.
  9. Remove sanding dust between each grit of sandpaper by lightly dragging the tack cloth across the surface.
  10. Using a clean, lint free rag, flood each wooden plank and the space in between each plank with a different color of wood stain. Be creative and choose your own assortment of Rust-Oleum® Wood Care Ultimate Wood Stain colors. Be generous with the amount of stain applied.
  11. Let the stain sit for 2-3 minutes then wipe off any excess stain. Using a clean rag, wipe in the direction of the grain. Ensure that all excess stain is removed from the surface.
  12. Let dry for 1 hour.
  13. Apply the Rust-Oleum® Wood Care Ultimate Polyurethane with a high quality synthetic bristle paint brush. Apply 2-3 coats for best results.
  14. Allow to dry 2-4 hours in between coats. Allow to dry fully for 2 hours.
  15. Once dry, display the wooden tree for everyone to admire.
