    If an adhesive is thick and not flowable, what effect does this have when used in a paste machine?

    Skips and missed spots occur when pulling wallcovering through the machine, moving parts can gum up, gears can be damaged and lumps behind the wallcovering can occur.

    How thick should an adhesive be applied

    A moderate even coating will do.  Excessive adhesive will push out at edges, smearing on the face of the wallcovering resulting in extra effort for clean up.  An experienced hanger will adjust the thickness of application based on the wallcovering backing.  The setting on the paste machine can be adjusted to apply adhesive at different thicknesses.

    Do our adhesives dry out faster than others?

    No.  There is not a marked difference in drying time between our full strength adhesive and a competitor’s.  Dry times of adhesives vary depending on temperature and humidity and whether water has been added to the paste.  When SureGrip adhesives are whipped to a flowable state, they provide plenty of open time for hanging, double-cutting and easy clean up.  All wallcovering should be booked according to manufacturer directions.

    Do SureGrip clay adhesives dry faster in machines than other brands?

    Compared full strength to full strength, the answer is NO.  Actually they stay wet longer.  If an adhesive must be cut with water for it to flow in a paste machine like Roman’s or Gardner’s clays, the added water will extend dry time, BUT job failure is a very high risk.  Why?  Clay adhesives are formulated with less water for use with wallcoverings that tend to bubble, curl at edges/seams.  Cutting a clay paste with water will almost guarantee problems.

    How much water can be added to paste before it becomes a problem?

    Any water added to paste weakens its performance.  Its strength is diluted, and there is a greater chance that seams will open, edges will curl, wallcovering may bubble, and the job could be contaminated.
