What is the difference between a Semi-Transparent Stain and a Solid Stain?

The biggest difference between a semi-transparent stain and a solid stain is the opacity.  Semi-transparent stains are pigmented stains that impart some color on the wood while still allowing some of the grain of the wood to show though.  Solid stains are opaque stains with lots of pigment covering the wood grain.  The other big difference is that the semi-transparent stain penetrates into the wood while the solid stain is a film forming stain that forms a layer on the surface of the wood.

What is the difference between a Semi-Transparent Stain and a Transparent Stain or a Toner?

The biggest difference between a semi-transparent stain and a transparent stain or toner is the opacity.  Transparent stains and toners impart very little pigment on the wood.  The finish will look nearly transparent with a hint of color and most of the grain will show though.  The semi-transparent stain has more pigment in it than the transparent stain or toner.  It will impart more color onto the wood than the transparent stain or toner will and less of the grain of the wood will show through.  Most semi-transparent stains, transparent stains, and toners are penetrating stains, however the Restore 12X Transparent Stain & Sealant is unique in that it is a film forming coating that is 12X thicker than ordinary sealers.
