Elegant Wood Headboard

+
Wood stained headboard behind a bed.

  1. PREPARE: Always work in a well-ventilated area. Cover the floor and nearby items with drop cloths.
  2. SAND: Sand the surface of the headboard, first using 120-grit sandpaper, then 180-grit, and finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the grain. Remove sanding dust between each grit of sandpaper by lightly dragging the tack cloth across the surface.
  3. STAIN: Using a clean, lint-free rag, generously cover the headboard with Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain (we used Weathered Gray). Let the stain sit for 1-2 minutes (or as instructed on the label) then use a clean rag to wipe off any excess, following the direction of the grain. Ensure that all excess stain is removed from the surface. Let dry for 1 hour.
  4. EFFECT: For additional effect, apply a darker shade of Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain (we used Kona) on the edges or other desired areas. Allow to sit for about 1 minute and wipe away to desired effect. Let dry for 1 hour.
  5. PROTECT: Protect headboard by applying 2-3 coats of Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane in Matte finish using a high quality synthetic bristle brush. Wait 2 hours between coats. Allow 2 hours to dry to touch after application of final coat. Allow 48 hours to cure before moderate use of project and 7 days for total cure.
  6. FINISH: Once dry, your headboard is ready for use.
