Lightly sand a piece of unfinished wood with fine-grit sandpaper and wipe off residue with a tack cloth.
With a lint-free cloth, generously apply Varathane Wood Stainto the entire wood surface and let it sit for 2-3 minutes, based on your desired richness of color.
Wipe off excess stain with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Let the wood stain dry for 1 hour.
Use painter’s tape to cover about 1-2 inches around the perimeter of the wood sign, leaving the center exposed.
Following the instructions on the can, apply light coats of Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Spray Paintto the exposed wood in a slow, back-and-forth motion. Let the chalkboard paint dry for 20 minutes between coats and for 1 hour after you’ve applied the last coat. Paint will be dry to handle in 1 hour.
