Light the way with these wood-stained candle lanterns. Varathane Gel Stain is easy to use and won't drip or run on vertical surfaces. Watch how Rob Rein of Gingerwoodworks creates this masterpiece on Instagram.

Sand your unfinished wood lanterns with fine grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface.

Stir the gel stain with a stir stick to ensure even color. Apply the gel stain with a foam brush and wipe off the excess with a lint-free cloth. Let it dry according to the directions on the label (approximately 8 hours). Apply the recommended 3 coats of Spar Urethane to protect your lanterns for outdoor use, according to the directions on the can.

Once they are completely dry, add candles, greenery and any other decor.
