Make a magnetic chalkboard and key holder from wood, magnetic primer and chalkboard paint to help you stay organized!
Lightly sand the surface of the wood board with #180- to #220-grit sandpaper and remove sanding dust. We recommend Gator Finishing sanding products. With a lint-free cloth, generously apply Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain, leaving the center area bare. Let stain sit for 2-3 minutes, based on the richness of color you prefer.
Wipe off excess stain in the direction of the wood grain with a clean, lint-free cloth and let the wood stain dry for 1 hour. For additional protection, apply Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane according to the directions on the can.
Once stain has dried, tape off the center area for your magnetic chalkboard.
Using a stir stick, very thoroughly mix the Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer until it has a lump-free consistency. Continue to stir during application.
Using a good quality foam roller, apply three coats of magnetic primer to the surface, waiting 30 minutes between each coat. Allow the last coat of magnetic primer to dry for four hours before top coating.
Stir your Chalkboard Brush-On Paint thoroughly with a stir stick. Then, using a good quality foam roller, apply two coats of chalkboard paint to the surface, waiting 2-4 hours in between each coat. For a smooth, even finish, use light and even strokes and avoid excessive rolling.
Remove tape.
To paint the hooks, follow the instructions on the spray paint can. Shake your can of Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Hammered Spray Paint for 60 seconds after mixing ball begins to rattle. Hold the can 8”-12” from the surface and spray in a steady, back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart.
After hooks have fully dried, attach to the magnetic chalkboard using a screwdriver.
Allow three days for chalkboard surface to fully cure before conditioning. To condition your chalkboard, rub the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface and erase with a chalkboard eraser or dry cloth. Once your chalkboard is completely conditioned with chalk it is ready to use.
Hang your magnetic chalkboard and stay organized!
Tip: Rare earth magnets work well with Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Primer.
