Framed Chalkboard

Create a framed chalkboard with a seasonal message for your mantel with Chalked Ultra Matte Spray Paint and Chalkboard Paint.

  1. Remove the insert from the frame and set it aside. Working outside or in a well-ventilated area, shake your can of Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Hold the can 10-12” from the frame and apply the spray paint in slightly overlapping strokes. Apply 2 or 3 light coats a few minutes apart. For additional protection, apply the Chalked Ultra Matte Protective Clear Topcoat, following the directions on the can.
  2. Stir your can of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer and using a foam roller, apply to the frame’s insert, following the directions on the can. Allow the primer to dry for 1 hour.
  3. Use a stir stick to thoroughly mix your Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Brush-On Paint. Then, using a good quality foam roller, apply two coats of chalkboard paint to the surface, waiting 2-4 hours in between each coat. For a smooth, even finish, use light and even strokes and avoid excessive rolling.
  4. Allow your chalkboard surface to fully cure for 3 days before conditioning. To condition your chalkboard, rub the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface and erase with a chalkboard eraser or dry cloth. Once your chalkboard is completely conditioned with chalk, you can add the message of your choice and display the chalkboard.
