Wood Plant Stand/Side Table

+
wood side table or plant stand with pink legs

Completed

  1. Cut four equal legs 23" long from the 1 1/2" turning stock. Measure and mark 4" from one end.
  2. Using the plane, taper two adjacent sides of each leg to the end so the bottom foot of the leg is 7/8" square.
  3. Cut four pieces at 7 1/2" from the 4' x 2" x 3/4" stock for the apron.
  4. Using the pocket hole jig, pre-drill two holes on each end of the apron pieces into the wide end of the legs, marking each with matching letters or numbers to ensure the correct assembly sequence.
  5. Sand legs and apron up to 220 grit.
  6. Attach legs and apron pieces using pocket hole screws (fine pitch) and glue. Set aside to dry.
  7. Cut three pieces just over 15" long from the wide maple stock. Match grain so that the top is consistent across its width. Edge join with a hand plane or power jointer so the edges are 90 degrees; glue and clamp three pieces edge to edge and set aside to dry.
  8. Remove extra glue and sand the top smooth; cut to a final dimension of 15" square. Ease the edges with sandpaper or a plane, creating a bevel on the underside of the top so the finished edge is approximately 3/8".
  9. Place the top face down and invert the leg assembly, centering it on the top. Mark the top so that the leg assembly is centered side to side.
  10. Spray-paint the top, sanding with 320-grit paper between coats.
  11. Stain the leg assembly.
  12. Attach scrap-wood cleats, pre-drilling slightly larger holes to allow for wood movement and affix them to the top using screws that penetrate approximately halfway through.
  13. Pre-drill holes in the cleats to attach the top to the leg assembly, again using screws that penetrate approximately halfway into the side apron. Four screws are sufficient for this step.
