How To Paint A Tile Floor

AFTER

BEFORE

You’ve updated everything in your bathroom but now the floor is really showing its age. Instead of replacing it, you can paint it! Rust-Oleum HOME Floor Paint is a two-part system that requires no stripping, sanding or priming. It will give your space a refreshed, updated look for a fraction of the cost of new tiles.

  1. Make sure your floor is clean of dirt and debris and dry.

  2. Apply painter's tape along the border edges and anywhere you don't want paint.

  3. Apply Base Coat (color shown Steam Gray) in 4’x4’ sections, and maintain a wet edge while rolling. Do not let product puddle. One coat is recommended. After coating the entire floor, wait 6 hours before applying any necessary touch-ups. Let touched-up areas dry for 1-2 hours (dry to touch) and then Top Coat can be applied.

  4. If you want to add a design on top of the Base Coat with another color, do this before applying the Top Coat. Make sure the initial Base Coat applied has dried for 6 hours. To create the triangle pattern pictured above, use painter’s tape to create a triangle (covering half of the tile) on every other tile. Line the painter's tape up against the grout lines to keep a straight edge and then lay one piece of painter's tape across the center of the tile. Apply the second color Base Coat within the taped design with an angled paint brush. Carefully pull off the tape while the second color Base Coat is still wet. Wait 6 hours before applying any necessary touch-ups. Let touched-up areas dry for 1-2 hours (dry to touch) and then Top Coat can be applied. If no touch ups are necessary, Top Coat may be applied 6 hours after initial Base Coat application.

  5. Apply Rust-Oleum Home Top Coat. in 4’x4’ sections, and maintain a wet edge while rolling. Do not let product puddle. One coat is recommended. If a second coat is desired for additional durability or uniformity, wait until the first coat is dry to touch (1-2 hours) before applying, but must apply within 24 hours.

  6. For full system, allow 24 hours for light foot traffic. Allow 72 hours before replacing furniture (avoid dragging). Full cure is 7 days. Do not wash before 7 days.
