This DIY baseball bat project is easy with Varathane wood stain. Combine All-American patriotism and your favorite sport for a piece that’s sure to start a conversation.
Step 1: Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or liquid stripper. Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the direction of the wood grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress to #220 grits. Wipe off sanding dust with a lint-free cloth before staining.
Step 2: Stir or shake material thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Apply a sample of stain on an inconspicuous area to test. Apply one coat of stain liberally with a brush or clean, lint-free cloth. Allow to penetrate for 5-10 minutes then remove excess by wiping with another clean cloth in the direction of the grain.
Step 3: Allow stain to dry to the touch for approximately 1 hour. Apply one coat of Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane. Allow at least 2 hours to dry. All 24 hours for full cure.
Step 4: Once fully cured, stars can be glued to the blue portion of the project and bats can be assembled on a firm backing, such as plywood.
