Floor paint and painter’s tape are all you need to give an ordinary floor an eye-catching pattern. For this project, Making Pretty Spaces addeda high-end design to a builder-grade tile floor using Rust-Oleum HOME Floor Coating.
Apply painter's tape along the baseboards and any other surfaces you don't want paint. Start by trimming the perimeter of the floor using Rust-Oleum HOME Base Coat with a high-quality paint brush.
Use a paint roller to apply the base coat in 4’x4’ sections. Maintain a wet edge while rolling. Do not let the paint puddle. If additional base coats of floor paint are needed for your desired coverage, let the first coat dry for 6 hours before applying an additional coat. After you’ve painted the entire floor, wait 6 hours before making any necessary touch-ups. Let any additional coats or touch ups dry for 1-2 hours.
Use painter’s tape to create your own pattern on the floor. Apply Rust-Oleum HOME Base Coat in different colors between the tape lines. Carefully remove the painter’s tape while the paint is still wet. Let your painted design dry for 1-2 hours.
Next, apply Rust-Oleum HOME Top Coat. First, trim the perimeter of the floor using a high-quality paint brush. Then, roll the top coat in 4’x4’ sections. Maintain a wet edge while rolling. Do not let the floor paint puddle. One coat is recommended. If a second coat is desired for additional durability or uniformity, wait until the first coat is dry to touch (1-2 hours) before applying. The second coat must be applied within 24 hours of the first coat.
Allow the top coat to dry for 24 hours before walking on the floor. Wait 72 hours before replacing any furniture, and avoid dragging it across the painted floor. Let the floor paint fully cure for 7 days before washing the floor.
